Business English Vocabulary - Writing
There is no way to give you all the vocabulary related to business English - not even in 100 articles. However what I will try to do is give you a set of vocabulary that you can learn and use in certain business situations.
What we will look at today is a small collection of words and phrases that are used in business writing.
Things to write
- Memo - (memorandum) short written document usually used to send information quickly to many people in an organization
- Letter - A written document used to send information between two people.
- Contract - A legal agreement between two or more people or companies to do business together
- Business Plan - A special document that outlines a plan for starting and running a business
- Press Release - A special document that is sent to the news media (press) to tell them special information about your company
- Proposal - A document that outlines suggestions and ideas for a new business idea or strategy
Writing Actions
- Draft - something you write but still needs more work on it before it is finished
- Edit - to make changes to a writen document
- Re-write - to write something again completely
- Revise - to make changes to the words you used in your writing
- Delete / Erase - to remove somethingcompletely from your writing
Things Connected to Writing
- File Folder - a special folded paper used to hold similar papers together to keep them organized
- Filing Cabinet - a metal cabinet with drawers used for holding many files of paper
- Word processor - a computer program used for writing and editing
- Paper Shredder - a machine to cut paper into small peices before putting it into the garbage.
Idioms
- Paper trail - All of the paper documents connected with a business transaction
- The pen is mightier than the sword - this simply means that in many cases words can have more power than weapons.
This is just a short selection of business vocabulary. In order to improve your English skills you will need to study many other words and phrases, and know when, how, and why you need to use them.
