English as a Second Language Books

There are thousands of ESL books that you can choose to help you study English.  Some are better for ESL teachers, and others are better for people who are learning English.

Here are a few tips to remember when you think about buying ESL books to help you improve your English.

  1. Is the ESL book part of a series?  It is often very useful to get English study guides that have 3 or 4 books in a series (e.g. grammar 1, 2, and 3) so that you can continue when you finish one book.
  2. Is it easy to understand and follow?  Some books are very confusing - even if your English is good!  Make sure it is clear and easy to follow.
  3. Is the book right for your ability?  Don't get books that are too hard for you.  You will only get frustrated and disappointed.  Work at your own level and you will soon be able to use more difficult material.
  4. Does it include an English CD Rom or DVD with extra English exercises?  Extra activities can really help improve your English skills that the book is teaching you.
  5. Is the book really what you need?  Books are great and very important.  However buying a 3rd or 4th TOEFL book probably won't help you pass the TOEFL any faster.
  6. Is the book written n your 1st language?  If yes, why?  Take action.  Learn English in English!  There are thousands of excellent books to help you learn English at every level, for every skill, and on any topic.
  7. Choose to work on 2 or 3 language skills at the same time.  Grammar, reading, listening for example.  Then change skill each time you study and do everything in each book before your buy your next ESL study guide.
  8. Search on Amazon.com for ESL book reviews so you can learn what other people think about the books before you buy one.

These are just a few tips that can help you buy better books for studying English as a Second Language.
